The Amateur Traveler talks to Zora O’Neil who is one of the co-authors of the Rough Guide in the Yucatan guide book. Zora talks about this very beautiful, very tropical and very isolated part of Mexico. Learn about the beach communities (Riviera Maya – Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen; Costa Maya – Majahual, Xcalak; Isla Holbox), getting around, the food (Xni Pec, Achiote), the colonial cities (Merida) and the Mayan ruins (the Ruta Puc, Uxmal, Calakmul).

I´ve never been to Mexico, but I know that Mexico has a lot of amazing places to visit such as Yucutan. Your blog is great.

Hey Chris
Thanks for such a great show. My husband and I are planning a trip to the Yucatan this April so I really appreciated all the great input. We’re renting a car so it was great to hear from Zora that it’s not as scary as some people make it sound. We ordered Zora’s book after listening to the show. thanks again for all the hard work. I’ve really appreciated all the great shows.

Still catching up on old shows… how is the water in Mexico/Yucatan these days? When I was in Cancun in 2006, we were told to boil water or use only bottled water. We were also told not to eat raw salsa (which was so sad, because I figured it would be great there) since veggies are grown with the local water and caused Montezuma’s Revenge a few days later(bad diarrhea, stomach upset). Since there was no mention of it, but Cancun was covered in this episode, I just wondered if this had changed since I went or if this was still the case. I loved Cancun, but our party of 4, in order to not get sick, ended up avoiding a lot of raw foods because of this.

At the resort I stayed at the water out of the tap was safe to drink. They were desalinating and purifying much of the water the hotel was using.
