Grutas (Cave) de Loltun - Yucatan, Mexico - Photo

The Yucatan is composed in large part of limestone and is riddled with caves and with sink holes called cenotes. The largest known cave is the Grutas de Loltun not far from Uxmal just off the Ruta Puuc. This cave was inhabited by humans as long ago as 10,000 years and was later used by the Mayan people for ceremonial purposes and for defense.
