Tarahumara Girls – Creel, Mexico – Daily Photo

This image was made just outside of Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico, considered to be the gateway to the Barrancas del Cobre, or Copper Canyon, in one of a few tiny settlements that are home to the Tarahumara people, renowned for their running abilities. There are estimated to be 50,000 to 70,000 Tarahumara people left, many of which still lead a traditional life, living in natural shelters such as caves and under cliff overhangs, scratching out a living selling handmade trinkets, baskets and textiles to tourists and locals alike. A very humble and shy people, it took some time for them to warm up to the camera.
These young girls – three sisters, I believe – followed me around for a bit and then allowed me get several images of them sitting on a bench in one of the local churches. These churches are rather unique in and of themselves because they have no pews, just an open area in the middle, and so members sit on the floor or on a few benches around the perimeter.
